AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES MASTER'S PROGRAM IN STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS.

The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) has unveiled its latest initiative aimed at transforming the communications landscape in the region. The newly launched Master of Arts in Strategic Communications Programme is set to redefine the role of communications professionals across various sectors.

Dr. Isaac Mwaura, Gina Din Group Founder and Executive Chair Gina Din and AKU Provost and Vice President Academics Dr. Carl Amrhein during the launch of the University's Master of Arts in Strategic Communications Programme set to improve communications training and research in the region.



Therefore this two-year program offers a comprehensive curriculum with diverse electives covering areas such as Health and Development, Political Communications, Financial & Investor Relations, and Environment & Climate Change. Led by a faculty comprising experienced academicians and industry experts, the course structure combines in-person sessions with cutting-edge online classes through a Virtual Learning Environment.



Prof. Nancy Booker, Dean of GSMC, emphasized the program's focus on addressing the complex challenges faced by communication professionals, policymakers, corporates, risk and crisis communication teams, government entities, and leadership in the developing world.



"The growing importance of communications as a strategic function in every sector necessitates a shift from tactical approaches to strategic integration within organizational strategies," noted Prof. Booker.



The addition of the Strategic Communications Program complements GSMC's existing offerings in Digital Journalism and Media Leadership & Innovation, solidifying its position as a leading institution in media and journalism education in the region.



Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Isaac Mwaura, Government Spokesperson and Chief Guest, highlighted the pivotal role of communicators as architects of narratives that inspire action, facilitate understanding, and drive innovation. He stressed the importance of strategic communication in informing citizens about government policies, countering misinformation, and managing public perceptions, especially during crises.

Renowned PR expert Gina Din Kariuki, in a keynote address, commended GSMC for formalizing post-graduate education in strategic communications. She emphasized the program's timeliness and relevance in an increasingly complex and technology-driven world.



The program, developed through extensive research and stakeholder consultations, aims to equip strategic communicators with the necessary skills and mindsets to effect positive change in society.
