GOVERNMENT INTENSIFIES EFFORTS TO COMBAT ILLICIT TRADE IN PETROLEUM SECTOR.

In a keynote address at the State of the Petroleum and Oil Industry Briefing, Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary of Internal Security and National Administration, emphasized the critical need to tackle illicit trade in the petroleum sector.

Dr. Omollo highlighted the detrimental effects of illicit activities on national security and consumer safety, citing incidents such as the tragic fire in Mradi Area, Embakasi. He underscored the intertwined nature of reliable petroleum access with security operations, urging for collaborative efforts to address emerging threats.

The briefing outlined comprehensive strategies, including advanced technology deployment for surveillance, legal framework enhancements for stricter penalties, public education campaigns, and law enforcement training. The establishment of a dedicated Energy Police Unit was also emphasized to safeguard critical infrastructure.


The government's Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) targeted rogue LPG dealers and illicit petroleum businesses, resulting in the registration of thousands of facilities nationwide. Dr. Omollo urged for continued cooperation between government agencies, industry players, and the public to ensure the sector's integrity and national development.
