The 14th Nairobi Regional Conference, held at Jumuia Conference and Country Home in Limuru from April 3rd to 4th, 2024, brought together delegates to address critical issues affecting the region and the nation at large. Guided by the theme "Dignified Livelihoods, Resilient Communities," the conference emphasized the importance of uplifting citizens and fostering resilience.
One of the key concerns highlighted by the conference was the systematic impoverishment of Kenyan citizens due to political and social governance structures. The conference called upon both national and county governments to take immediate action to address the drivers of poverty and prioritize the prosperity of citizens.
The conference issued strong recommendations, including a transformative approach to combating corruption. It urged collaboration among key institutions like the Judiciary, National Police Service, Parliament, and the Executive to tackle corruption effectively. Additionally, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was encouraged to focus on instilling ethics and integrity through educational initiatives.
Another critical aspect addressed was the need to dignify livelihoods by creating favorable business environments and reducing taxation burdens. The conference advocated for simplified processes for starting and running businesses, citing the success of the Huduma Center model. Furthermore, a plea was made to development partners to support entrepreneurship training, particularly for youth, women, and men.
The conference also condemned the distribution of fake fertilizer, emphasizing the importance of integrity and accountability in government agencies like the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
In addition to economic concerns, the conference raised alarms about the ongoing healthcare sector crisis, urging governments to prioritize the welfare of medical workers and the public healthcare system.
Lastly, the conference called for comprehensive civic sensitization on the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, emphasizing the need for public involvement in decisions with significant impact, including potential constitutional amendments.
The conference concluded with the election of new officials to lead from 2024 to 2027, reinforcing its commitment to positive change and dignified livelihoods for all residents of the Nairobi Region and beyond.
