NCCK NORTH RIFT REGION CALLS FOR ACTION.

The 14th Regional Conference of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) North Rift Region, held at the RCEA Conference and Training Center in Eldoret on April 18th and 19th, 2024, centered around the theme "Dignified Livelihoods; Resilient Communities," drawing inspiration from Galatians 6:9. This conference, representing Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Turkana Counties, addressed critical issues affecting the region and the nation at large.
1. **Mourning the Loss of Leaders:** The conference began with solemn condolences for the passing of senior military personnel, including General Francis Ogolla, highlighting the impact of their contributions and the need for unity during times of national mourning.
2. **Combatting Insecurity:** The delegates emphasized the urgent need to address insecurity, citing recent high-profile casualties as symptomatic of broader challenges facing the North Rift region. They called upon all levels of government to prioritize dialogue and action to ensure the safety and rights of all residents.
3. **Investing in Infrastructure and Education:** Recognizing the link between infrastructure, poverty alleviation, and social stability, the conference urged local governments to prioritize infrastructure development, including education and healthcare facilities. They emphasized the importance of education in empowering youth and fostering a culture of national identity.
4. **Tackling Corruption:** Corruption was identified as a major impediment to development and security, with a call for swift and decisive action against corrupt practices. The conference stressed the need for accountability and transparent governance to rebuild public trust.
5. **Addressing Health Sector Challenges:** The ongoing healthcare sector strike was highlighted as a humanitarian concern, urging both county and national governments to engage in meaningful dialogue and provide necessary resources to resolve the crisis.
6. **Promoting Civic Engagement:** The conference underscored the importance of citizen participation in governance and electoral processes, calling for accessible information and active involvement in decision-making.
7. **Urgency of Electoral Commission Formation:** With electoral processes at stake, the conference urged expedited formation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to uphold constitutional rights and ensure fair representation.
8. **Electricity Safety Awareness:** Concerns over electricity-related accidents prompted a call for responsible usage practices, emphasizing the role of community education and collaboration with utility providers.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to love, unity, and collective action towards building a better future for the North Rift Region and Kenya as a whole. Bishop Dr. Emmanuel Chemengich, as the newly elected Regional Chairman, emphasized the enduring value of compassion and solidarity in achieving lasting progress.
