NCCK WESTERN REGION CONFERENCE CALLS FOR AGRICULTURAL AND GOVERNANCE REFORMS.

BY NJOKI KARANJA.

The 14th Regional Conference of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) Western Region, held at St Patrick’s Pastoral Center in Kabula on May 16-17, has issued a clarion call for transformative changes in agriculture, governance, and societal values under the theme "Dignified Livelihoods, Resilient Communities."

In a bold statement, the conference, which brought together delegates from Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, and Vihiga counties, emphasized the critical need to revitalize the region's agricultural sector. Once the nation's breadbasket, the Western Region now faces neglect and stagnation. Delegates criticized both national and county governments for failing to promote value addition and agri-business, leaving residents entrenched in outdated farming practices.

Agricultural Economy Transformation:

The NCCK Western Region advocates for a farmer-centric overhaul of the sugar sector, empowering farmers to control production, processing, and sales, and calls for diversification into high-potential crops. Emphasizing the importance of youth engagement, they urge development partners to support agricultural training and initiatives. Additionally, they demand reduced taxes on agricultural inputs and products to enhance food security and affordability.

Combatting Corruption:

Addressing the pervasive issue of corruption, the conference highlighted the urgent need for a societal shift in attitudes. They called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to lead a campaign against corruption and urged the judiciary to expedite corruption-related cases, ensuring strict penalties.

Taxation and Governance:

The conference condemned the government's frequent tax hikes, arguing that the burden is unjust given the lack of corresponding services and infrastructure. They warned that such policies are fostering social unrest and called for a more balanced approach to taxation.

NADCO Report and Electoral Reforms:

The NCCK Western Region also addressed the National Dialogue Committee's (NADCO) report, urging Parliament to involve citizens in the implementation process to avoid the fate of past initiatives. They stressed the importance of reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to uphold democratic processes, particularly in constituencies and wards awaiting by-elections.

Electrical Safety and New Leadership:

Concerned about rising electricity-related accidents, the conference announced a partnership with Kenya Power and Lighting Company to promote safe electricity use. New regional officials for the 2024-2027 term were also introduced: Presiding Clerk Seth Agala, Vice Chair Col Samuel Opuka, Hon Treasurer Rt Rev John Okude, Women Rep Centrine Wanjala, Youth Rep Christabel Jomo, and PWD Rep Grace Ahono.

Condolences and Commitment:

The conference concluded with condolences to families affected by recent floods, committing to ongoing relief efforts and prayers for the affected. They called for national transformation inspired by biblical teachings, aiming for a society defined by renewed mindsets and dignified livelihoods.

Presiding Clerk Seth Agala affirmed, "May the message of Romans 12:2 inspire us continually: 'Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.'"
