GLOBAL BIOECONOMY SUMMIT 2024 KICKS OFF IN Nairobi, MARKING HISTORIC FIRST FOR AFRICA.

Nairobi, Kenya — The Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) 2024 commenced today in Nairobi, a historic first for Africa and a significant milestone for the global bioeconomy movement. The summit, co-hosted by Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, welcomes international leaders, including German officials and representatives from various nations, to discuss sustainable economic growth through bioeconomy.
CS Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja CS Agriculture and Livestock Development, officially opened the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2024 in Nairobi, representing the East African Community and Africa, from October 23rd-24th, 2024.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Dr. Andrew Karanja, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, emphasized the critical role of the bioeconomy in addressing the challenges posed by a rapidly growing global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. He stressed the need for innovative solutions to meet food, nutritional, and employment needs while minimizing environmental impact.


“Hosting GBS 2024 in Africa signifies global recognition of the bioeconomy as a pathway for sustainable development,” Dr. Karanja stated. “It’s an opportunity for African nations to connect with the global community, share experiences, and advance bioeconomic strategies.”


The summit also highlights the East African Community's pioneering efforts in developing a regional bioeconomy strategy, alongside national initiatives from countries like South Africa and Namibia. Delegates are encouraged to explore collaborations and symbiotic relationships among academic institutions and the private sector to further advance bioeconomic initiatives.


The event is backed by notable organizations, including the International Advisory Council on Global Bioeconomy and the Stockholm Environment Institute, underscoring the importance of partnerships in tackling global challenges.


The discussions at GBS 2024 aim to inspire innovation and facilitate knowledge sharing, ultimately fostering sustainable practices that can benefit communities across Africa and beyond. As the summit unfolds, participants are poised to explore new frontiers in bioeconomy development and strengthen global ties in this critical sector.


As the summit continues, delegates are optimistic that this gathering will not only enhance cooperation but also pave the way for a sustainable future through bioeconomic practices.
