KENYAN INNOVATOR UNVEILS GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY TO REMOVE HEAVY METALS FROM WASTEWATER.

BY BERNARD MULWA.

A breakthrough technology designed to remove heavy metals and foul odors from wastewater has been unveiled at the 2024 Kenya Innovation Week, marking a significant step towards cleaner and safer water sources. Developed by Dr. Paul Tanui, a senior lecturer at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and founder of Ongataki Solutions Limited, the technology is set to revolutionize water purification processes in industries such as chemical manufacturing and tanning.

Heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and chromium are known to be toxic at even low concentrations, often contaminating water through industrial activities, mining, and outdated infrastructure. These metals pose serious health risks, including cancer, liver and kidney damage, and nervous system failure. Dr. Tanui’s innovation offers a solution to safely separate these harmful substances from wastewater, ensuring the water is purified and safe for consumption.

The unveiling of this technology at the prestigious Kenya National Innovation Week, held alongside the Presidential Awards Africa Edition 2024, provided a platform for local and global innovators to showcase their solutions. This event serves as a pivotal gathering for entrepreneurs, researchers, and startups to connect with potential partners, funders, and customers.

The event was graced by Engineer John Tanui, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy, who emphasized the importance of empowering the next generation of innovators. "In a world that is rapidly evolving, the need for visionary, dynamic entrepreneurs has never been greater," he stated. The government’s Entrepreneur Leaders Training Programme, he added, is an essential initiative designed to nurture talent and foster a culture of innovation.

Dr. Tanui’s pioneering work exemplifies Kenya’s growing role in the global push for sustainable solutions in the water and environmental sectors. His company, Ongataki Solutions Limited, continues to lead the way in water purification and industrial waste management technologies, with the potential to change the future of environmental health in Kenya and beyond.
