REGIONAL EXPERTS GATHER IN NAIROBI TO ADDRESS ILLICIT TRADE IN SMALL ARMS AND LIGHT WEAPONS.

Nairobi, Kenya – Principal Secretary Dr. Omollo officially opened the Forum of National Focal Point Coordinators for Small Arms and Light Weapons (NFPs) today at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi. The forum, a key initiative of the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), brings together representatives from 14 African countries to collaborate on strategies to combat the growing threat of illicit arms trafficking in the region.

The meeting, which includes experts from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Burundi, Seychelles, and Sudan, is a significant step towards strengthening regional and national frameworks for controlling the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Omollo emphasized the importance of collaboration and the sharing of expertise among member states to tackle the challenges posed by the illicit trade in weapons. He stated that regional cooperation is crucial in developing comprehensive strategies for the safe and effective management of small arms and ammunition, which have fueled violence and instability across the continent.
The forum's discussions are set to focus on enhancing security protocols, improving arms control regulations, and fostering stronger coordination between governments and regional organizations. By developing unified approaches, participants aim to address the dangerous flow of small arms and light weapons that undermine peace and security in the region.
The event marks a critical milestone in ongoing efforts to curb the illicit trade of arms and ensure the safety and stability of East and Central Africa.
