Kenya has taken a monumental step towards advancing Africa’s digital and green transformation with the launch of two groundbreaking initiatives: the Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skilling and the timbuktoo GreenTech Hub. The initiatives were unveiled at the Konza Technopolis in a partnership between the Government of Kenya, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the timbuktoo Africa Innovation Foundation.

The launch marks a significant leap forward in equipping Africa’s public sector with the digital and AI capabilities needed to drive innovation, improve governance, and enhance global competitiveness. The Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling, now operational at the Kenya School of Government, will train 100,000 civil servants from across the continent. With support from global tech giants like Microsoft and Google, the Centre aims to foster digital fluency in the public sector, transforming service delivery and accelerating the region’s technological advancement.

As AI adoption skyrockets globally, with corporate investment nearing $1 trillion and projections to reach $200 billion annually by 2025, Africa is positioning itself to benefit from this technological revolution. The Centre’s cohort-based curriculum will provide tailored digital and AI training to civil servants from Kenya, Uganda, Cape Verde, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Nigeria, with plans to expand across the continent in 2025. The initiative is expected to improve public service efficiency, promote advanced technology adoption, and foster regional collaboration on digital innovation.

Alongside the digital transformation effort, the timbuktoo GreenTech Hub aims to drive Africa’s green economic transformation by promoting sustainable innovation and job creation. Focused on addressing the region’s environmental challenges, the GreenTech Hub will contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7, which calls for affordable and clean energy. By advancing green technologies and supporting entrepreneurship, the hub will help Africa transition to a more sustainable and resilient economy.

The dual launch of these initiatives underscores Kenya’s commitment to leveraging digital and green technologies as catalysts for economic development and social progress across the continent. By bridging the gap in digital and AI skills and promoting green innovation, the Government of Kenya, in partnership with UNDP and the timbuktoo Africa Innovation Foundation, is laying the groundwork for a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa.
