The Somali Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Jabrit Ibrahim Abdulle Toçay, has condemned acts of violence that disrupted Mogadishu City Club’s recent match, stressing the need for peace, respect, and solidarity in sports.
Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, Ambassador Toçay welcomed Mogadishu City Club to the Somali Embassy, describing their participation as a symbol of Somali pride and the aspirations of young sports fans across the region. He expressed regret over the incidents that marred the game, emphasizing that such actions do not reflect the values of the Somali people or the strong ties between Somalia and Kenya.
“Such behavior does not reflect the values of respect, friendship, and shared sovereignty that guide the relationship between our two brotherly nations,” the Ambassador said.
He underscored that relations between Somalia and Kenya are at their strongest in history, highlighting growing cooperation in trade, investment, education, security, and cultural exchange. He further commended Kenyan authorities—including the Kenya Police Service, Kenya Police FC administration, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and Sports Kenya—for their professionalism in ensuring the safety of players and fans during the tournament.
The Ambassador assured that the Somali Embassy is working closely with Kenyan officials to guarantee the safety of both teams and their supporters as competitions continue.
Calling for calm and unity, Toçay reminded fans that football serves as a bridge of friendship and a unifier of communities.
“Football is more than a game – it is a reflection of African unity and sportsmanship. Let us work together to preserve the true spirit of the game, ensuring it remains a source of harmony, dignity, and shared aspirations for a brighter future,” he said.
