Uganda’s State Minister for Cooperatives, Hon. Frederick Ngobi Gume, has been honoured to attend the 14th Africa Ministerial Cooperative Conference, currently taking place at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. The high-level continental gathering has drawn ministers, policymakers, and cooperative leaders from across Africa to deliberate on the role of cooperatives in driving inclusive economic growth and sustainable development on the continent.
Hon. Gume, who has served as Uganda’s State Minister for Cooperatives since June 6, 2016, and represents Bulamogi North West County in Kaliro District, highlighted Uganda’s progress in strengthening cooperative societies as a key pillar of rural transformation.
In his remarks during the ministerial roundtable, Gume emphasized Uganda’s renewed commitment to revamping the cooperative movement, improving access to financial services, and empowering local communities through collective enterprise.
> “Cooperatives have been, and continue to be, engines for socio-economic development across Uganda. We are committed to modernizing our cooperative systems to ensure they remain relevant and resilient in today’s dynamic global economy,” he stated.
The 14th Africa Ministerial Cooperative Conference serves as a platform for member states to share experiences, forge regional partnerships, and craft strategies aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Hon. Gume’s participation underscores Uganda’s active role in regional cooperative development and its vision to use cooperative models to enhance agricultural productivity, value addition, and financial inclusion.
This year’s conference theme, “Strengthening Cooperative Resilience for Sustainable Growth in Africa,” resonates with Uganda’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and modernize cooperatives that were once a cornerstone of the nation’s post-independence economy.
Gume’s attendance at the Nairobi event further cements Uganda’s reputation as a regional leader in cooperative reform and rural economic empowerment.
