The Children’s Traffic Park on Nyerere Road was a hive of colour and excitement on Sunday as Unaitas SACCO, in partnership with Critical Mass Nairobi, hosted a highly successful edition of the Toto Mass Kids’ Day Out. The event drew hundreds of children, parents, and cycling enthusiasts for a day dedicated to child safety, wellness, active mobility, and early financial literacy.
Families began arriving as early as 8:00 a.m., turning the park into a lively landscape of bicycles, helmets, whistles and eager young riders. The main cycling procession set off at exactly 9:00 a.m., guided by Critical Mass marshals and closely supported by the Nairobi Traffic Police, whose officers ensured a safe and educative experience. Police teams led demonstrations on reading road signs, maintaining lane discipline, proper use of protective gear, and understanding children’s traffic rules—lessons that parents said are missing in many neighbourhoods across the city.
Beyond cycling, Unaitas SACCO created an interactive Family Engagement Zone where children learned the basics of money management through games and age-appropriate activities. Parents received guidance on nurturing savings habits for their children, with Unaitas showcasing its Jasiri Account, a youth-focused savings product designed to help young people begin their financial journey early.
The event enjoyed overwhelming community support, attracting families from Nairobi and neighbouring suburbs, youth cycling advocates, early childhood educators, community wellness organizations, and county security teams. Many parents praised the initiative for offering a safe, structured environment where their children could freely cycle and learn.
“This event proves that when children feel safe, they thrive,” said Kennedy Karinga, Head of Marketing at Unaitas SACCO. “We are proud to contribute to a culture where children can play, ride, and learn. Importantly, we used this opportunity to remind families that financial confidence begins early. Every shilling saved today gives our children a stronger tomorrow.”
A representative from Critical Mass Nairobi noted the growing public demand for safer and more inclusive child-friendly spaces in the city. “Toto Mass has become a movement of its own, bringing together families who want safer streets and healthier cities. Today’s turnout reflects a growing demand for intentional, child-friendly public spaces in Nairobi,” the representative said.
This edition of Toto Mass recorded its highest participation yet, with more than 300 children and over 100 parents taking part in guided cycling sessions. Activities included bike-handling lessons, obstacle courses, safety demonstrations by the Nairobi Traffic Police, and financial literacy sessions led by Unaitas SACCO.
Unaitas SACCO, one of Kenya’s leading deposit-taking cooperatives, serves over 400,000 members across 13 counties and aims to transform lives through innovative and accessible financial solutions. Toto Mass, an initiative by Critical Mass Nairobi, continues to push for safer streets, improved cycling infrastructure, and inclusive mobility policies, ensuring that children have safe spaces to play, ride, and thrive.
The successful event underscored the growing importance of creating public spaces where children can learn, grow, and have fun while acquiring essential life skills in a safe and supportive environment.
