RAPID SUPPORT FORCES WELCOME INTERNATIONAL MEDIATION, ACCUSE SUDANESE Army LEADERSHIP OF BLOCKING PEACE.

BY NJOKI KARANJA.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Thursday issued a statement welcoming stepped-up international diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Sudan, while sharply criticizing the leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), whom it accused of obstructing progress toward peace.
In the statement, the RSF expressed “sincere thanks” to U.S. President Donald Trump and leaders of the Quad countries—an international grouping that has been involved in mediation efforts—for their “valued efforts and commendable mediation” aimed at halting the months-long war and alleviating the suffering of civilians.

The paramilitary group said it is responding “fully and seriously” to the new diplomatic initiatives but argued that any breakthrough remains hindered by what it described as a faction within the SAF leadership. The RSF alleged that a “clique” of former regime loyalists and figures tied to the Muslim Brotherhood controls decision-making within the army and is intent on prolonging the conflict.

According to the statement, this group “ignited this war with the aim of returning to power over the bodies of innocent civilians.”

The RSF reiterated its commitment to pursuing what it called the aspirations of the Sudanese people, including dismantling systems of corruption and political influence allegedly embedded by Islamist networks within state institutions. It said its long-term vision includes building a “new Sudan” with a unified, professional national army free from ideological extremism.

The claims could not be independently verified, and the SAF has not yet issued a response to the latest accusations. The two sides have been locked in a violent power struggle since April 2023, a conflict that has displaced millions, devastated infrastructure, and drawn increasing concern from regional and international actors.

International mediators have intensified efforts in recent weeks to bring the warring factions back to negotiations, but sustained progress has remained elusive.
