March 31, 2026. The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued nomination certificates to candidates set to contest in upcoming by-elections, signaling a renewed push to consolidate its political base ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the exercise, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar called on young voters, particularly Gen Z, to actively participate in the country’s democratic processes. He urged the youth to move beyond online activism and engage directly in elections, emphasizing their critical role in shaping Kenya’s future leadership.
Omar highlighted the party’s adoption of technology in its internal processes, noting that UDA has fully digitized its nomination primaries. According to him, the move demonstrates that transparent digital systems can deliver free, fair, and credible elections, setting a benchmark for other political parties in the country.
Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago expressed confidence in UDA’s prospects in the 2027 polls, arguing that many of those seeking to challenge President William Ruto are familiar figures who lack fresh ideas for voters. He maintained that the ruling party remains well-positioned to outperform its rivals.
At the same time, Omar took aim at former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of engaging in covert efforts to undermine the current administration’s achievements. He urged Kenyatta to desist from what he described as political interference and “stop living in denial.”
The UDA Secretary General also criticized The Standard, accusing the publication of biased reporting and character profiling. He challenged the media house to address its internal challenges, including staff welfare and financial obligations, before casting aspersions on others.
Omar concluded by calling on media institutions to uphold professionalism and ethical standards, warning against what he termed as a growing trend of malicious reporting that undermines responsible journalism.
