MACMILLAN MEDICAL TRAINING COLLEGE LAUNCHES SCHOLARSHIP AND WOMEN IN TECH PROGRAMS TO EMPOWER YOUTH.

BY NJOKI KARANJA.

Macmillan Medical Training College has launched two major empowerment initiatives aimed at expanding access to education, healthcare training, and digital opportunities for young Kenyans, while also calling on the government to extend education funding to students in accredited private institutions.
Speaking during the launch event, the college’s director said the newly unveiled Afya Bora Scholarship Program and Women in Tech Empowerment Program are designed to address unemployment, healthcare workforce shortages, and unequal access to education opportunities across the country.
The Afya Bora Scholarship Program will provide full and partial sponsorships to deserving students pursuing accredited medical and healthcare training, while the Women in Tech Empowerment Program — launched in partnership with NIA Innovation and Technology Training College — will offer fully sponsored technology and innovation training for women aged between 18 and 40 years.

According to the institution, the initiatives seek to ensure that talented youth from disadvantaged backgrounds are not locked out of opportunities because of financial hardship.
The director noted that many young people complete secondary school only to face unemployment and hopelessness due to lack of college fees and limited access to practical skills training.
He said the institution had chosen to become a “solution-oriented institution” focused on practical education, employability, innovation, and youth empowerment amid rapid global changes driven by technology, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.
The college emphasized that the programs are aligned with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and operate within accredited TVET education frameworks under TVETA and CDACC standards.

The institution further said private medical colleges continue to play a critical role in complementing government efforts by training healthcare professionals needed to support Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.

The director highlighted the growing need for healthcare assistants, caregivers, community health workers, emergency responders, and digital health support personnel, saying Kenya’s healthcare system cannot function effectively without sufficient trained personnel.
At the same time, the college urged the government to reconsider current funding structures that disadvantage students in private institutions.

The institution called for the expansion of HELB and other education financing opportunities to students enrolled in accredited private colleges and TVET institutions, arguing that support should be based on need and potential rather than whether a student studies in a public or private institution.

“This discrimination must stop,” the director said, while emphasizing that all Kenyan students deserve equal opportunity, dignity, and support regardless of where they study.
On the Women in Tech Empowerment Program, the college said the initiative seeks to bridge the gender gap in technology and innovation by equipping women with skills in programming, digital entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies.

The institution said women remain underrepresented in technology spaces globally despite the growing influence of digital innovation on economies, healthcare, education, and communication.
The program also aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, gender equality, decent work and economic growth, innovation and infrastructure, and good health and well-being.

The college appealed to the media to help amplify the initiatives and spread awareness to vulnerable students and communities across the country.
The director reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing graduates who are academically qualified, employable, innovative, compassionate, and globally competitive.
