NAIROBI, June 25, 2026.
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has pledged to provide free legal representation to more than 200 protesters arrested during nationwide demonstrations commemorating the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests.
Speaking outside Central Police Station after visiting the detainees on Thursday, Owino condemned the arrests, describing them as an infringement on the constitutional rights of young Kenyans who had taken to the streets to demand better governance, employment opportunities, and relief from the rising cost of living.
The lawmaker said the protesters were also commemorating fellow demonstrators who lost their lives during the historic anti-government protests of June 2024.
“There are over 200 suspects here, and these people are innocent. The only offence they have committed is going to the streets to fight for their rights and commemorate the comrades we lost in June 2024,” Owino told journalists.
He questioned the legality of the arrests, noting that authorities had yet to disclose the charges the detainees would face.
“We do not know the charges they intend to bring against them, but whatever charges they present, we shall meet them in court tomorrow,” he said.
Owino expressed confidence that the protesters would secure their release through the courts, emphasizing that the Judiciary would ultimately determine the outcome of the cases.
He urged Kenyans not to be intimidated by law enforcement agencies, arguing that once suspects are presented before a court, all parties stand equal before the law.
The MP revealed that he was coordinating a team of advocates to represent the protesters during their court appearances, vowing to mount a strong legal defense.
“We will organize ourselves with many lawyers to ensure that justice is served. Our comrades who are being held here today will be free,” he stated.
Accompanied by lawyers James and Ndegwa, as well as activist Sheikh, Owino also delivered bread and milk to the detainees at Central Police Station. The gesture was aimed at supporting the protesters, many of whom were expected to spend the night in custody.
The arrests occurred amid nationwide demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests, a movement that mobilized thousands of young Kenyans against controversial government policies and called for greater accountability in public institutions.
The arrests and subsequent court proceedings are expected to spark a significant legal and political debate, with lawyers representing the protesters preparing to challenge both the charges and the circumstances surrounding their detention.
