Forum for African Women Educationalists – Kenya Chapter (FAWEK) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation to address the escalating issue of teenage pregnancies in Kenya. The partnership, known as the Imarisha Msichana Project, aims to make significant strides in reducing teenage pregnancies during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis by the year 2025.

Implemented across 20 counties in Kenya, including Nakuru, Nairobi, Machakos, and others, the project's core interventions involve generating credible data on teenage pregnancies, advocating for the re-entry of girls into school post-pregnancy, and conducting sensitization forums for girls, young women, boys, parents, and community leaders on human sexuality and prevention.

The ultimate goal of the Imarisha Msichana Project is to ensure that more girls stay in school, complete their education, and become productive members of society. Through policies like re-entry to school after weaning, FAWEK aims to prevent the exclusion of young mothers from education and break the cycle of poverty perpetuated by teenage pregnancy.

In a press statement, FAWEK highlighted the alarming statistics revealed by the KDHS Report of 2022, which showed that nearly one in every five households in Kenya faces the challenges of teenage motherhood or has already experienced it. This reality often forces teenagers to abandon their education, leading to financial strains and increased vulnerability to health risks.

The upcoming event organized by FAWEK and its partners aims to sensitize stakeholders on the school re-entry policy, discuss achievements and impacts of the Imarisha Msichana Project, share best practices for reducing teenage pregnancy and early marriage, and empower community leaders to support the project's interventions.

With an expected outcome of increased re-entry and retention of teen mothers in schools and heightened community awareness on the school re-entry policy, FAWEK and the MasterCard Foundation are poised to make a significant difference in the lives of young girls and women in Kenya.
